We all have needs, but often we ignore them, used as we are to the belief that we should be in total control of ourselves and our businesses. To have a need would make us dependent and would show weakness. Now who would want to show that? Or we are afraid that once we acknowledge our needs, they will overwhelm us?
But a need is not a weakness. It's a signal, coming from our (outer or inner) environment -- our employees, our customers, our partner, our feelings, our thoughts, our bodies - warning us that something is happening that threatens the smooth flow and operation of our lives, our business, our health or our relationships, so that we can take appropriate action.
When you are experiencing:
- A sense of isolation in important matters
- A need for an objective sounding board, someone who has no stake in the outcome
- A lack of teamwork among important people in the company
- Questions about your own leadership or the leadership of others as the company grows
- A lack of time to develop vision and strategies
- A loss of control
- Tension; some kind of worry about yourself or others in the company
- Feeling overwhelmed by too many issues than you seem unable to handle.
- A nagging sense that things could go much better than they do now
- A sense of boredom and sterility, a lack of passion
- A vague desire to change something or someone, but you're not sure what or how
- A sense that a fresh approach is needed
You can choose to repress all these signals and fight them as symptoms with help of pills, but then you'll never know what insights they had to offer you.
Or you can choose to bravely and honestly look for them, accept them as valuable messengers and begin to follow up on their suggestions.
If you choose the latter, executive coaching may be a valuable resource in your search for fresh answers and your need for a paradigm shift.
